At 9:30 this morning, a factory worker in Carlstadt, New Jersey was in the middle of work when something went horribly wrong.
The factory worker who suffered the injury was actually a crane operator. He was in the process of shifting steel onto a pile so that it could be transported when the crane began to shift. Despite his best efforts, he couldn't stop the crane in time, and the load of steel that he was moving fell from the crane's clutches, crushing him.
Luckily, the steel fell in an awkward enough way that it didn't land on him directly. It was also fortunate that there was enough room between the steel for other employees in the factory to wedge machinery in-between. They were able to alleviate the pressure of the steel fairly quickly, but it took over an hour to unearth the man from the pile that was on top of him.
While he's still alive and was conscious when he was taken to the hospital, his legs were pinned that entire time. We'll keep you updated when we know more, but it's a safe bet that these injuries are going to take a long time to heal.
The cause of the accident is difficult to say right now. It could've been faulty machinery, something wrong with the conditions of the workplace, or negligence on the part of someone overseeing this operation. An investigation is underway, which will hopefully shed light on the root cause soon.
